IELTS Practice Tests
What is on this page
Six complete IELTS practice tests, free and online: three Academic and three General Training. Each test has the four papers of the real exam, in the real order and at the real length, so you can sit a full mock in one go or practise one paper at a time.
- Listening: four sections, 40 questions, about 40 minutes, with transcripts to check afterwards.
- Reading: three passages and 40 questions in 60 minutes (Academic), or social, workplace and general texts (General Training). Marked the moment you finish, with an estimated band.
- Writing: Task 1 and Task 2 in 60 minutes (a letter and an essay in General Training). Otto, the site assistant, marks your writing against the official band descriptors and explains the score.
- Speaking: Parts 1 to 3 with cue cards, 11 to 14 minutes, to record or practise with a partner.
How to use the tests
Sit the first test under exam conditions to find your current band, then work on the weakest paper. The Listening and Reading bands are estimated from your raw score; the Writing mark is a guide to help you improve, not an official result. Before Writing Task 1, work through the describing trends vocabulary unit. For B2 First or C1 Advanced instead of IELTS, use the Cambridge practice papers; every exam paper on the site is listed on the exam practice page, and grammar practice on the worksheets with answers page. If you want a teacher to mark your writing and coach your speaking, exam preparation lessons are taught live, one-to-one.
